This happened to me. No, I was not the bimbo! I once worked with a girl who is as sweet as summer strawberries, but as dumb as a dodo. And I use the word “dumb” in the most loving way possible. She is very innocent, very un-exposed and very unaware of a lot of things. One day she was talking about this guy who tried to chat her up during the weekend, and how she was pissed off when he seems to be lying to her straight off the meeting… Her: So I was like “where you from”, right? Cos his accent was a bit different. And he was like, “South Africa!” and I’m like, “Riiiiigggghhhttt!” but he kept insisting he’s from South Africa! Me:…and that bothers you becaaauuuuuuse? Her: Well, he was white. It’s so obvious. Me: What is? Her: What do you mean, “what is”? He’s WHITE. He’s not black! He’s obviously not African! I didn’t have the heart to correct her, because every other colleague was there and I didn’t want to embarrass her. I’m pretty sure our workmates felt the same because I’m not the only one who had that reaction. When you’re likable, people don’t go out of their way to hurt you…so we left her with her misunderstanding alone. I’m not sure if we did the right thing… That was about 3 years ago. Everytime I come across anything remotely South Africa, I am reminded of this conversation and my reaction. lol
